I have a few habitat areas which creatures can use for homes which I try not to disturb too much.
In my garden the Bumble Bees have decided to ignore those and have chosen a spot under the path. Right next to a clump of Chives they have an entrance tunnel.
Some are foraging in my garden others are going further afield in two directions. They go way out of sight and return heavily laden with pollen.
I decided they had better have a house sign so that no casual hoeing goes on and causes aggro.

It was difficult getting a shot of an arrival, I hope the little fella is visible bottom centre.

When I was a lad I had a small colony in my sisters old dolls house in a tree. They deserted, probably my enthusiasm put them off.
Years later I had a Solitary bee species in a tube on a rack in my garage.
those miniature cameras are so cheap to buy now....literally just a few quid.
I have a tiny infra red one which I had hoped to use on a maternity roost of pipistrelles but I couldnt get a license which was a shame cos the kids would have loved that.
Working with kids you really do have to keep coming up with a wow factor otherwise they are just not interested. I used to leap around like a deranged David Bellamy too.
Do you keep honey bees?

Yes radio linked cameras of course now. If I had put them in my boxes I would have blamed those for having zero residents this year :-)

I don't keep honey bees, not that it has not been a desire since that dolls house.
more Kate than Bill Oddie to be honest!
I used to keep bees but they are at lot of work especially these days with varroa.

brilliant idea!
I used to have a couple of nest boxes set up with miniature cameras and one spring a newly emerged queen bumble bee ousted the pair of blue tits who had begun making their nest and i was able to show the local kids what happens in a bumble bee colony.
It really is quite fascinating!
