The Shallots and Garlic are perfectly hardy and are growing well. After a hard frost they look sad, then as the day warms up you wouldn't know there had been minus 6C temperatures overnight. The same goes for the Cabbage family, they are designed so that their cell walls don't burst like tender plants do when frozen.

This row is all French varieties of Shallot. French Ronde, Traditional French Longue, Grissle (Grey or Frogs Legs) and Garlic planted alternately.
The birds find the little Frogs Legs easy to pull up, I do hope some survive the constant up heaving and replanting.

How do you account for the major difference in the size between the plants of the same variety Chas?
